"One of the great themes of literature and of life is that of home, discovery and return. You only have to read 'The Odyssey' by Homer, 'Lord of the Rings' by Tolkein, or the stories of the Prodigal son or Jacob to see this theme worked out. Home represents security and everything that is worth fighting for. Then events, either external or internal, cause the protagonist in the story to set out on a journey of discovery where he is tested. Throughout the journey however he retains a sense of home that is often contrasted to what he is experiencing now. Finally he returns home again changed by what he has been through and passes on what he has learned to the next generation (Psalm 78).
In many ways Jesus' life reflects this theme. He left His home in heaven, prompted by love for us, to undertake a dangerous, sacrificial journey of discovery. He experienced everything that we experience as humanity. Ultimately that took Him to the Cross. In a turnaround that could only be of divine origin, He triumphed over death and returned to His heavenly home with a name that is a above all names (Philippians 2:5-11).
