Day Six: Forever Reign

Read Luke 1:31-33

31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

God's surprise for Mary was a Son; new life growing on the inside of her.  But, not just any son of course; Gabriel said, "You will give birth to a Son and call His name Jesus."  The very same thing has happened in a spiritual sense to every believer who has invited Jesus to live inside of them.  Think about that (Selah).

The angel went on to say this Son would be great..."Son of the Highest...the LORD God will give Him the throne of His father David; He will rule - - forever, no end, ever, to His kingdom (MSG)."  The lineage of Jesus was a fulfillment of prophecy given down through the ages.

Isaiah for one had prophesied the gift of a Savior, a Deliverer, the promised One, who would come to rescue the people of Israel.  It was he who said, "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.  For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end.  He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.  The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this (Isaiah 9:2, 6-7)."

Now the time had come!

Surely Mary had heard the prophecies.  She would have been taught the scriptures, and she would have been part of the waiting ones looking for the Messiah.  But, in her young mind could she have comprehended what all of this meant?  She would have a son?  ("But, I'm only engaged.")  He will be called great..the Son of the Highest?  ("But, I'm only a poor, peasant girl?")  He will reign forever, His kingdom will never end?  ("Forever?  Only God is forever...")

What a weighty message.  "All of this is going to happen...and all of this is going to happen in me?" Mary must have wondered.  Yes!  And, spiritually speaking it is to happen in you and me today!  Yes!  Whoever you are reading today, God wants His Son to be born in you!  God desires to bring this new life in you.  And He longs for you to allow His Son to reign on the throne of your heart "forever, no end, ever, to His kingdom" rule in your life.  He IS King!  But, is He King over your life?

Have you received this new life?  And if you have, does Jesus really reign as King (Ruler, Lord, Master) over your life?  There is another king who desires that place.  The king of self; the king of this age, Satan; the king of idols, anything that rivals for that place only Jesus deserves, i.e. careers, hobbies, a spouse, a child, a friend.  Surrender is a daily assignment.

What is the Holy Spirit saying to your heart?
